Dear Subscribers,
I am grateful to be able to write and publish directly for so many of you through this newsletter. It’s been a boon through these years of corporate retreat from support of the arts, when so many of the venues I used to write for either folded or were folded into media conglomerates. And the number of subscribers to this newsletter has grown steadily.
But a year ago this newsletter had exactly the same number of paid subscribers as today. In fact, the number of paid subscriptions has held steady since 2022, while the readership of Dada Drummer Almanach has doubled.
As you may have noticed, I have not been putting any of this newsletter behind a paywall – which, some have pointed out, could have something to do with the situation? So for 2025 I am launching a new incentive program for paid subscribers: Dada Drummer Platinum™.
Like other platinum programs, the benefits are best defined by bullet points in solicitation letters that you recycle without opening. However, the most immediate will be access to newly paywalled parts of this newsletter – my music recommendations.
I want to be careful and not paywall any articles related to public advocacy, which I believe need to be freely available. And I’m not so good a cook that I think my ideas about vegetables are worth much beyond my own table. The listening suggestions in this newsletter seem to have proven useful for some, however. So I’m hoping they might give more of you an excuse, if not a reason, to support Dada Drummer Almanach financially.
To bolster those recommendations, I’ll be building out a new paywalled section of the newsletter with more information I gather and have gathered over the years about recorded music, and recording musicians. The first article in that section goes live today, on Annette Peacock’s 1980s albums - featuring an interview with the artist herself.
Please consider supporting my work on this newsletter through a paid subscription. You might also consider subscribing this year as a Founding Member, who in addition to Platinum™ status receive a signed first edition of any book developed from these essays – a book that qualifies will be published in the fall of 2025 by Yale University Press.
And did you know you can gift subscriptions…?
Solidarity,
Damon
I don't disagree with your paid strategy, but by the way, mine is like the exact opposite. Anything I write that recommends other artists is free, whereas my original content is paywalled.
Just finding the comparison humorous! Otherwise there's no meaning behind it, particularly because I expend zero effort trying to get paid subscribers and have the nearly zero paid subscribers to show for it.
Anyway thank you for your writing regardless.
Thanks for nudge. Genuinely love the newsletter. Subs paid. Happy Christmas and thanks for publishing. I genuinely value and appreciate your thoughtful and interesting words.
