We got back from Tokyo about two and a half weeks ago (or is it longer), and I'm sorry to miss you there. This particular Japanese trip was unusual because there were so many Americans there, and/or people I know from Los Angeles. Even when I was standing in line at Immigration at Hanada Airport, I heard a voice from the crowd yell out "Tosh, Tosh," and it was my dentist. This was unthinkable that something like that could have happened on previous trips. But yes, Japan is a remarkable spot. I suspect somewhere down the line (not far off) we will move there. But we will see.
Outrage? Yeah, I’ve unplugged. Was sort of headed in that direction anyway but then the election happened and I’m done. I’ve been “informed” my entire life and what has that gotten me? Stress and now, perhaps the last election we’ll ever see. Plus the dismantling of the government.
That morning I unsubscribed from The New Yorker, The Sun, and the only current events substack I read: Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters.
I’m planning focusing on making art (I paint), music, and reading.
As I’ve said before, my father’s brothers did not perish in the Battle of the Bulge for any of this. But here we are...
I really like your blog, but some of the political statements (calling everyone who voted Republican a fascist) seem wild to me. I'd love to e-meet and potentially convince you otherwise! Stalk me at https://asaekengren.github.io
I didn’t say that in the essay but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t. If you voted to install this fascist govt I would prefer that you unsubscribe from this newsletter.
I was in Japan just weeks before the election and it already acted as a reprieve from the noise of North America. Can't say I know what it's like to live there, but damn, it's a healing place to visit.

*Sigh*. Ok.

I want the same things. Thank you saying what you said so simply and elegantly.
